CEF

A global field-building hub designed to confront and prepare for catastrophic climate risks.

The Climate Emergencies Forum (CEF) is a global initiative dedicated to understanding and preparing for catastrophic climate risk—abrupt, nonlinear disruptions to Earth systems that could produce severe and potentially irreversible impacts on societies and ecosystems.

the Climate Emergencies Forum

Work on catastrophic climate risk is currently fragmented across communities that rarely operate together. Scientists study tipping points. Indigenous communities observe early signals of change. Policymakers, funders, and finance institutions are beginning to ask what preparedness and responsible response should look like.  At the same time, researchers are exploring potential climate interventions and response strategies.  Yet these efforts often evolve in parallel. There is little shared infrastructure connecting risk science, response capabilities, and governance frameworks into a coherent field of preparedness and action. CEF was created to help bridge this gap. The Forum brings together diverse communities, including researchers, Indigenous leaders, youth networks, Global South organizations, civil society actors, funders, finance practitioners, and policymakers, to:

  • Strengthen shared understanding of catastrophic climate risk
  • Connect scientific insights with governance and preparedness discussions
  • Surface perspectives from frontline communities and the Global South
  • Explore responsible approaches to climate intervention and response
  • Develop the institutional foundations needed for global preparedness

By connecting these communities early, CEF aims to help shape a field focused not only on predicting catastrophic climate risks but also on preparing responsibly for them.

Coalition-building

Within its first six months, the Forum brought together more than 60 organizations across science, governance, civil society, Indigenous leadership, and philanthropy, many of whom had never previously collaborated.

Through coalition-building grants, CEF supports youth-led and frontline organizations in convening their communities, exchanging knowledge with scientists, and contributing perspectives on risk, justice, and preparedness to global climate discussions. Current coalition-building grantees include organizations working across the Arctic, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East to strengthen dialogue between scientific research, community knowledge, and global climate governance.
